Napoli!
Travel day but luckily a shrot ride. Got up early for last minute packing and went to Café Milano for our last coffee and say goodbyes to the sweet folks who work there.
Called our first Uber in Rome and were taken to the station: 7 minute ride cost €12. We were super early so we walked over to the Mercato Centrale food hall and got us some great sandwiches to take on the train.
Ciao ciao, Roma. It only took a little bit more than an hour to arrive at Napoli Garribaldi station. Got in a tax to meet Gina, our new landlord, at Piazza Dante. We had to wait about 10 minutes for her then she came and walked us down an alley to the aparment building. We are on the top floor, the 5th and the tiny elevator only goes up to the 4th. Ken decided to climb all the way, WITH his big heavy suitcase. Glad he made it—breathing hard and sweaty. The apartment is really nice and the views from the 2 terraces are gorgeous.
After we settled in a bit we decided to walk to Piazza Gesú to get a tourist map. We started down via Toledo and way over shot our mark so we used google to come back through some small streets to find it. We went into the big church there with beautiful floors and opulent decorations. I saw this priest waiting in the confessional, on his phone. The phones! they’re everywhere!
We walked a bit more through the lively crowded streets feeling the great energy of this city. Talked to some high school boys about a math competition on a big wall: (this picture would just not load???)
Stopped in one of dozens of bakeries to grab some dessert—one sfogliato and one other ricotta based tartlet.
Supermarket just down the street made for easy shopping. We bought stuff to make for dinner: sausages, pasta, onions and salad. Got home and realized we also would need salt and oil so I went back to buy them. My round trip was only 15 minutes—pretty convenient.
We took our wine outside to check out the views. From the top/roof you can see the bay but not really in these shots:
Had dinner around 8:00 and after cleaning up, watched some Sneaky Pete and that was it.
Ken has been watching Nicole Wallace streaming live on MSNBC every night at 10:00. I try to only listen half way by working of my photos or playing Words with Friends while he does that but how can I not get sucked into this political circus! Geeeez! (sorry, I promise no more politics!)
Love the earthiness. You are a wonderful expressive documentarian! I feel like I’m taking these steps by your side. Reminds me of the Ferrante novels which I’m sure you’ve read. Thanks Jan. Another face of Italy!
You’re off to a great start. Love the view from your terrace!
Gorgeous view! What I remember most about Napoli was the food – everything dairy was made from sheep milk so .i could eat it! Also Vesuvius looming over the cityy and islands, and the traffic! The traffic was insane, but also fascinating in its own way. Those daring little Vespas!
