Finalmente, il Sole
Finally we awoke to a different kind of light, sunlight. The sun was shining and it was glorious.
We met our friends on the corner and went to the Bar Italia for coffee before setting off into the Langhe for a little day trip. First stop–Grinzane Cavour to see the castle and its surrounds. It was so clear we could see the French Alps.
We enjoyed the views and the exterior of the castle before going into the museum. After a sometimes laughable film about the history of Grinzane we strolled through the rest of the rooms, including this one devoted to wine.
From there we drove to Annunziata and Osteria Veglio where we had a lunch reservation. What an exceptional meal! Linda really loved the amuse-bouche of a tiny cracker like puff with riccotta and sundriend tomatoes alongside a little steamed bun with a delicious mustard and smoked salmon. I loved the Capunet which is traditional Piemontese stuffed cabbage with a not traditional pumpkin sauce. Ken and Steve both had ravioli stuffed with mushrooms and duck. We also had a fork tender braised veal with mashed potatoes and guinea fowl with little onions. We ordered (with a lot of help from one of our servers) perfectly balanced and very drinkable Nebbiolo from Poderi Aldo Conterno. We shared 2 incredible desserts–one panna cotta with figs and one milk chocolate mousse with perfectly fresh raspberries. Steve got a sweet Moscato passito wine and then they served us a plate of almond cookies and a fabulous sandwhich of meringue with cold whipped cream. After coffee we were ready to get outside and appreciate the views from the restaurant.
On to La Morra where we walked up to the park to appreciate our luck in being here, together ,on this perfect weather day. And, of course the views.
Steve and I climbed a small tower which included a show of very feminine paintings. And I loved the colors on this building.
Walking back to the car, this church was beautifully lit by the sun.
Driving back into Alba we could sense the crowds increasing for the weekend. We all had rest time and then we did a walk to the train station for L&S to get their tickets for Sunday. We put together a nice salad and bread dinner and called it a night.
I was really happy that we managed to speak to both of our kids, thanks to Face Time. I so wish they were here with us.
The colors are so amazing…and the vineyard views….wow. I’m happy the sun came out for you!
Thank you Jan for sharing your Italian sunshine with us. As always your blogging/words and photos are just wonderful. Grazie.
What a beautiful day!
Wowz! The light on those golden buildings is awesome. Loving your trip!
Jan, it is morning here and I am drinking my home made cappucino which is nothing like what you are having. I am now full reading what you just ate. I am so envious. How wonderful to spend the days with your friends. And those views are luscious.
Looks fabulous. Glad Linda and Steve made it; wish I could join you. Have a wonderful time.
Wonderful colors and wonderful views. That stuffed cabbage was new to me. Have never seen it in Italy. Smashing blue sky you had there!
