Acqua Alta…again
Wanting to try a new spot for coffee, we walked to the super modern Farini in Campo San Lio. It is in a buiding that used to be a bank; there are 3 Farini cafes in Venice and one in Milan. I really liked their coffee, but the music was loud and it just was not for me. The acqua alta was pretty high and in some spots we’d never seen it beore, and we had to divert from our regular routes, but we never had a problem reaching our destinations.
We headed for Rialto. Linda and Steve stopped to take turns taking photots with another couple before we went up to the top of the bridge.
You can see, from the top of the Rialto how the water is so high, covering the streets.
We had 10:15 reservations for the roof terrace at the Fondaco dei Tedeschi. We very quickly browsed the designer shops from the escalator up to the top, waited a few minutes and there we were. The view is as stunning as ever. I had fun trying to recognize the towers from a distance.
Looking towards Rialto, I got this shot:
After our 15 minute time slot, we browsed the whole Rialto market which seemed smaller than usual to me. Still there were some locals there buying produce and fish, I guess for the weekend.
We took L&S by Mascari to see the beautiful spice display in the window:
And then walked down the Ruga into San Polo. We had a nice bench-sit in Campo San Polo. I liked seeing these windows without the customary dark green paint on the shutters:
Linda bought some earrings for gifts from the woman all of us Slow Travel people have gone to for years. L&S headed back while Ken and I went on. We stopped in Tonolo to get some desserts for dinner and had a great lunch at Estró. It was really the perfect lunch for me. We each had one of their creative tramazzini and shared a glass of very dry sparking white wine. We took a look at the dinner menu and it seems a bit too upscale for us, but the sandwiches were just right.
We had a nice walk home, stopped at the bakery for that Corona Salata bread I love, and a coffee at Cafe del Doge. Back over the bridge and we were home. It is so great to be here without the crowds!
Everyone napped and we had an easy dinner in our apartment including another special treat from Elisa. She called it a pumpkin quiche but it was more like a savory pie.
Another perfect day in the books.
Jan, is that just normal high-tide flooding or was it due to recent heavy rains?
It’s a combination of factors, not the least of which is the rising sea levels in general due to climate change.
I’d be afraid to fall into the canal! How do people know where the walkway ends and the canal begins? You can see the pavement right now, but when it gets deeper…
Is the lady with the ear rings Laura, who does creative things with stained glass?
I don’t thinnk so. The shop is on the main drag past Campo San Polo.
