Acqua Alta/High Water
We were all dressed and ready to go when Elisa came breezily down the stairs in her stylish rubber boots, telling us “There is high water today. You cannot go to the supermarket.” Basically she advised waiting awhile or buying some boots. We waited and then decided to go out; if we ran into water we would just turn around.
First off, Steve showed me this etching he discovered on the corner of our building dating it to 1607. I made it black and white to view the printing more clearly. Kind of mind boggling.
We walked along Fondamente Nove to the hospital and up into Giovanni e Paolo. These people were playing at creating “walking on water” photos.
Rosa Salva, a well-known cafe in the area, was full of people; we got a quick coffee there. After peaking into the big church we decided nobody was really into it so we went on to the Miracoli. I really love that little jewel of a church. The attendant told us entry was free today because of acqua alta. Took this photo just outside:
The water was not bad at all–a few puddles, some deep, but we all managed to stay quite dry. We pressed on to Ca d’Oro and the special art show there called “Dysfunctional.” My favorite thing was this Vitruvian Clock Man. We sat and watched him change the time, minute by minute; it was fascinating. He paints each minute, cleans up the lines and then, with a squeegee, removes the line and starts over on the next minute. The time he is marking is the current, actual time, for the 12 hours of each day. It’s so real it is hard to believe he is not working live inside the clock . the piece is called “Real Time” and it’s by Maarten Baas.
After to a visit to butcher on Strada Nuova, where the lovely lady gave us pieces of meatballs to taste, Ken and I came home to rest.
I took a nice long nap and then L&S and I watched Anthony Bourdain in Venice. Turns out that the place we went to in Burano was on the show.
Dinner was at an old favorite of mine, Vini da Gigio. It was fortunate that it was so close because it was raining fairly hard when we walked there.
We had 2 antipasti: mussels and moeche (soft shell crabs). Both were really great and simply prepared. Linda and I shared the tagliolini with spider crab sauce which I enjoyed more than she did. Ken had a pasta with duck sauce and Steve linguini wth clams which was an off-menu special. We drank (too much) 2 white wines, a Lugana and a really nice Pinot Bianco. And had a tiramisu and a chocolate mousse. Steve indulged in a dessert wine too. And he insisted on paying for our dinner. Grazie mille, Steve.
We wallked home quickly because it was getting colder and Elisa said there would be acqua alta again around 10. After formulating a plan for tomorrow, we called it a night.
I am so enjoying all your blog posts! So much fun reading about your time in Venice. Love your photos also! You are very lucky to have found Elisa., What a gem!!
