Intro to Orvieto
Priority number one here in Orvieto is the duomo, La Cattedrale di Santa Maria Assunta. We headed there through some back streets until we looked up to see this:
Not the best light, but you get the idea of what a gem this cathedral is with its stunning mosaic facade. We bought the Carta Unica at the ticket office so we can get into all of the sites and museums here.
First stop was the duomo museum showing works by Italian sculptor, Emilio Greco who worked in the mid 20th century and designed the current doors of the cathedral. I loved his sassy bronze women.
From there we went into the duomo. Some very special large marble statues of the 12 apostles and saints of Orvieto have very recently been returned to the duomo (after 122 years). There were 3 small tour groups learning about them. Still, it was very quiet and uncrowded inside. We sat for a while to watch this nun place flowers:
From there we walked back into town on via Duomo and turned left on Corso Cavour. We stopped for coffee at Bar Mantanucci and walked on towards Piazza della Repubblica and on from there. We saw a small courtyard /parking lot with a beautiful view of the countryside and stopped to take it in:
When I saw this carello outside the butcher shop I knew it was the right place. With just enough local women my age and Norcia in the name, I felt confident buying us some sausage here.
We headed back towards home after getting some lunch stuff.
After lunch and the appropriate rest, we took another nice walk before dinner to Piazza del Popolo, scene of the new, controversial, parking area.
We came back home. I cooked some cabbage, bean and sausage soup, which came out really great, and Ken went right into impeachment mode. We drank another local blended red which cost about €7 at the super market which we really liked.
I fell asleep early, but woke up when Kathryn and Tyler called for a long talk about their potential house purchase. Tough decisions for them!
Beautiful photos, Jan. Thanks for taking us along with you.
