Weather…
I always had heard that November in Venice is rainy and floody (it is, afterall, the anniversary month of the awful flood in 1966 when the water level reached 195 cm) but this is a bit much. Linda and Steve had to leave super eary for the train station so they could get on a boat without totally soaking their suitcases. Elisa walked them to Ca d’Oro because the Fondamenta Nove boats, here, wouldn’t fit under the bridges to the station.
We had a nice goodbye moment. It was such a wonderful week.
I had already committed to staying in all morning for a real rest and not wanting to go out in the aqua alta which peaked around 10:30. It was interesting watching the rough lagoon lap over the fondamenta, from our windows. But aqua alta is not fun for Venetians, at all.
Ken and I watched the movie “The Laundromat” which was somewhat entertaining and mostly disconcerting. At least Meryl Streep was in it; I can watch her anytime.
The rain stopped in the early afternoon so we went out to do some grocery shopping and grab a coffee. Chicken soup sounded perfect for dinner. By 2:00, I wore my rain boots but almost all of the floods had receeded.
We played cards, did laundry and hung out on our devices most of the afternoon. Around 6:00 we decided to go out for a drink at the We Crociferi bar, aka “the secret bar” and now called Combo. It’s just around the corner. It felt like going out in a hurricane. The wind and rain were strong; my umbrella blew inside out. The negroni was good as was the people watching at the bar.
As soon as we got home, I heard Elisa calling my name to give us a big bowl of lovely soup. So we had a 2 soup dinner and went to bed early.
I love the way you write. Even in the midst of aqua Alta you make everything sound hmm what shall I say? Inviting, Right, good, safe, romantic. A negroni night at that pretty bar, a rainy goodbye to dear friends, two soup dinner. It’s all so nice to read. If Meryl Streep makes any movie worth watching I feel you are the one that makes this Venetian adventure worth watching for me! I hope you feel better very soon.
Worst acqua alta in 66 years! What great travelers you are, and what great bloggers. I do feel sorry for the Venetians who have muck, mud and garbage to clean up and often merchandise, produce or belongings to move to safety, salvage or lose. Still bravo on making it sound like a bit of an adventure. Hope sunny skies follow.
