More Spoleto
We seem to be getting a later start every day, just in full vacation, take it easy mode. First we got coffee at the little chocolate shop right near us which I wish we had discovered earlier.
Then we took the travelator up to the Rocca and did the same walk as Sunday, just backwards. It is just stunning up there!
In Piazza Campello I was touched by this monument to the World War II soldiers and resistence who fought for freedom from the fascists.
Next stop was Piazza Mercato for groceries. First we walked around that area, checking out the roman arch and a few other small streets. We went back to Santini for their fresh pasta and prepared foods and got a bunch of stuff for lunch and dinner. Continued walking down and around. I needed one onion for dinner (pasta sauce for Ken) and we found a lovely little shop where a man was unloading his tiny little old truck with beautiful, fresh vegetables. I wanted to ask how he got this spinach so clean but didn’t.
We passed by a set of three funny/ironic urban art pieces. Here’s one:
Since we still wanted a bit of bread for lunch so we went to the bakery in Piazza Garibaldi and I discovered that they had big sandwiches on split foccacia and I had to have a tuna one. So, at that point I had double lunch but I only ate the sandwich plus some cookies.
We had a nice rest time and struck out for another walk. We hadn’t yet been inside the San Gregorio church in Piazza Garibaldi so we went there and there was a group of carabinieri waiting outside in their officious uniforms.
I asked another bystander and he said there was going to be a special mass for them. By the time we walked back around to the church again, about 20 minutes later they were all filing in, maybe about 50 of them.
Just before we came upstairs we ran into Norma and Laurie, the owners of Umbria Holiday Rentals and had a nice long talk with them.
We enjoyed our home cooked dinner of pasta and vegetables and finished off the lousy bottle of red wine that came with the apartment.
There was a lot of texting with Kathryn as they got the home inspection report with much to consider.
Our mood had definitely lightened and we really had a great day!
We got started later and later the longer we stayed some place, and yet I loved being out and about. love those cari I ieri uniforms., and, of course the photos and foods.
