A Long Walk
We had a bit of a hectic morning because I wanted to meet Amy and Larry’s boat with Elisa and also get some errands done. We went over to Bisol, the little butcher shop on Strada Nova where they sell some prepared foods in the back. I had a nice chat with the woman there and we got some spezzatino for dinner. While there, Elisa called to say they would be on an earlier boat so we rushed back only to find they were not on that boat. Finally we met them and they were thrilled with the “surprise” of the bigger and better apartment. I left them to carry on with Elisa and went to buy some lilies just around the corner.
Ken and I were thinking of going to Torcello for the day’s adventure but when we saw how crowded the boat was and thought about how chilly and windy it would be. We have yet to see 60° here and I am still wearing my black puffy jacket daily, so we changed our minds and just headed towards San Marco for a good long walk. First we stopped right on Fondamenta Nove at the newly opened San Marino exhibit for the Biennale; it was a little strange and some parts beautiful:
We stopped for coffee and a wonderful little two-bite strawberry jam tartlet at Ballerin and off we went. We passed through Campos San Luca and Manin and on to San Angelo:
From there we walked through Campo Santo Stefano and over the Accademia Bridge and then made a right to Campo San Barnaba where we sat to rest for a little while:
After Campo Santa Margherita I managed to resist stopping at Tonolo, but looking in the windows is calorie free. From there we started speed walking across San Polo and back over the Rialto bridge and home. Definitely kept our feet in the street today.
At 6:15 I went with Elisa to meet the vegetable delivery boat and enjoyed hanging out with her, hearing her tell about how the “lockdown” was for them here. I had ordered some jarred things just to try–pickled eggplant, artichokes in oil and mostarda of pumpkin and walnuts. Also got a bunch of green things:
We cooked some pasta and Roman cauliflower for dinner with the delicious spezzatino (small chunks of beef in tomato sauce) and that was that.
I’m really enjoying my lilies:
Jan you write so well. Your words are poetry and magic. You,at the nice, transport me to wall with you. I see everything. Grazie Mille.
Boy I’d love to be at the Biennale. Sorry to see Kenny in a mask. But he looks fit. Loved those Lillie’s!
If it makes you feel any better, most of our “spring” days here in CT have been about 10 degrees below normal and windy. : (
