Lazy Day
We got a really late start and before we knew it it was time to leave to meet our friend DMae for lunch. Stopping for coffee downstairs, the man there pointed out to me that Jesus Christ Superstar is opening at the Teatro Sistina, right down the block from us.
Our path to the restaurant, Ditrambo, took us past the Trevi and the Piazza del Rotondo in front of the Pantheon–not a bad stroll, at all.
You can see a bit of blue sky in the photo. It was short lived and it continued to sprinkle on and off the whole day.
We walked for a block or two, behind these two quintessential Roman guys and I couldn’t resist surreptitiously snapping this photo:
The highlight of lunch was hanging out with Dmae who had so lifted our spirits in 2008. We shared stories and life events the way old friends do. The food was just OK. I mistakenly ordered “Carciofi fritti” thinking of the single fried “Jewish Artichokes,” but the plate of sliced and fried pieces was just fine and enough for all of us to share. Lesson learned.
It got pretty cold and nasty as we left the restaurant. We headed to the Roscioli pastry shop and got a bunch of treats for tonight. So sorry, I didn’t take a picture because they were really pretty! Walking back towards home the umbrellas were in and out again. Holding the umbrella and navigating with the phone was challenging but I knew the general direction we needed to go and before we knew it we were in familiar territory.
We passed by Chiesa Santa Maria dell’Umilità with this beautiful piece on the front:
And finally we were home. Because of the weather and (truly) laziness, we never went out again. We just read and watched Netflix and took it super easy. I cooked a bit in the poorly equipped kitchen; we ate and had our yummy treats and that was it.
Well, you guys must still enjoy the cool weather, if not the rain. I see it will be 52 today. Must make Young Ken happy…
Despite the rain or because of it everything sounds wonderful. I love lazy days especially when you do not have time constraints on your vacation. It’s perfect to me to be lazy like you would be at home! I’m so glad you were able to meet up with friends. That makes a foreign city all the more cozy and familiar. I love the colors of the mens pants. grazie
