Art Direction, by Donna
Even though it was drizzling, the intrepid, passionate art enthusiasts that we are, hit the calles (streets). There were a few more artists Donna was interested in seeing. Palazzo Grimani, near Santa Maria Formosa, was our first stop. Here is the lovely entrance:
The museum has only been open here since 2015, and we had never been. It is the restored 16th century home of the Grimani family. As in many of these exhibits, the contrast of old and new really hits you powerfully.
First we saw the work of Georg Baselitz, a living German abstract painter and sculptor. I enjoyed all of the bright colors and the bronze sculptures which looks like wood:
Upstairs, we saw the work of Mary Wheatherford. The combination of neon tubes and a dark mythological theme (based on Apollo’s flaying alive of Marysas) made for interesting viewing:
I had read about a paper work exhibit in Dorsoduro, and since Donna is a paper artist, I chose that for our next stop. We walked through San Marco to Campo Santo Stefano and stopped for lunch at Le Café. We all enjoyed our spritzes and sandwiches etc. The people watching was rich.
Next, over the Accademia Bridge to the Chun Kwang Young show. It was interesting, but didn’t thrill me. I was more taken with the view from the back garden and the flowers:
We walked to the Zattere and Gelateria Nico to try one of their famous “Giandiutto” a cup with a bar of chocolate-hazelnut ice cream with a ton of whipped cream.
We sat on the water’s edge and stared out at Giudecca. Donna wanted to keep going, but Ken and I were done. While she went to the Accademia museum, we headed home. The neighborhood bakery wasn’t open yet, so we sat in a quiet campo to wait for 15 minutes before we got some bread and dessert stuff. I went on to the fruit and vegetable guys and got a cantaloupe called “Da Bomb.” And it was, in a good way.
For dinner we made a great spread of salumi, tomato salad, bread, cheese and melon.
Counting down–only 2 more nights in Venice Land.
