Giardini Biennale
First off, we went over to Bisiol to stock up on some prepared foods for the next few days. After we stashed it all away, we took off for the Giardini section of the Biennale “The Milk of Dreams”. We stopped at a no name bar for coffee and walked on through to Castello, through Campo Bragora, and onto the beautiful Riva. There is a huge, gray battleship parked there.
The long line to enter moved very quickly and I was excited. This is like the World’s Fair of Art. The show is very female focused (it’s about time) and the New York times headline was “The Biennale has a new Star: Women.” We saw so very much, but it was far from everything.
First off, we went into a few on the national pavilions including Denmark:
We spent a long time in the main hall, the Central Pavilion.
After taking in all of that, we went to the food area and had some quick sandwiches and coffee.
The Scandinavian countries had given their pavilion over to the Sami, indigenous people of their area.
The USA was represented by sculptor Simone Leigh. Her works are very large and there weren’t many but they are clearly black woman centric.
The France Pavilion had high entertainment value and seemed to be about films and the rooms like movie sets.
Finally we were over saturated and walked out. We breezed through the nearby sculpture garden and back tracked our way home:
After a short rest and some Face timing, Ken and I went out to the Coop. At 6:15 on the dot, Elisa was here for our trip to the vegetable boat. She also wanted to show us a newly restored chest of drawers in the big apartment.
We put together a fine dinner with the polpettone/meatloaf, zucchini and leftover tortellini and rehashed some of the art and everything else. Having Donna here is a treat and is like having a personal, instant, art reference source at any given moment. (Hi Lorin). We got in a lot of steps today. My body is rebelling to some degree, and so are my socks. I feel pretty stiff, but know I can walk this city with the best of them.
Love the art—and Simone Leigh Is great too… and near our age, I think!
