Leonardo Day
We started the morning with a nice walk to the Museum of Science and Technology featuring works by Leonardo da Vinci. The place is huge and we didn’t see anywhere near all of it. The first room showed a lot of household inventions including this very early Apple Computer:
I really liked this man made of toys in the area about plastics, trash and waste, and their adverse environmental impacts:
We went off the suggested path and headed for the Da Vinci rooms. Fascinating! They’ve done a great job of using scale models, video and still images to express the absolute genius of Leonardo. One screen showed a progression of a bunch (maybe 10 or 12) different Last Supper paintings inspired by Da Vinci’s. One part demonstrated how he invented cranes to put the gold ball on the top of the Duomo in Florence. And so much more. He was really an amazing person!
After the museum, we checked out a few restaurants nearby and settled on Barbapedana. We enjoyed Mondeghili (Milanese meatballs) fried on a bed of fresh spinach and braised beef in a porcini sauce with polenta.
We strolled through the outdoor markets and sat in the sun to people watch for a while before our 3:30 appointment at the Cenacolo Vinciano (Da Vinci’s Last Supper) Museum. They are very strict about the times for viewing, and the tickets are sold out months in advance. While we waited for our entry, we went into the church. During our 15 minutes in the actual chapel we were lucky that there was a guide in there I could hear most of his explanations in Italian and English. I’d seen the Last Supper before in 2005, but Ken had not. It is truly a monumental work and I was so glad we went.
We walked home from there and had a good rest. We got plenty of steps!
For dinner we went to the corner for Trapizzino which we first tried when we stayed in Trastevere in Rome. We both loved it, standing at a table outside, we each had two. For me–chicken cacciatore (which Katie Parla says is their best), greens and a Negroni; for Ken the same chicken and meatballs and an Aperol Spritz:
We were lucky to be out at the canal for this sunset shot:
We came back to the apartment and watched some TV and set our alarms for tomorrow’s early start for Udine.
We would have to be at the science, museum with you guys… and hey, we once had that computer! Or rather,Joe did… cool sunset pic…
