Chronorama
We woke to gray drizzle and chilly temps and for while I was thinking we should just stay in, but around 11:00 there was a break in the rain and we hurried off. First stop, Campo San Luca for coffee in the always crowded bar there. And we stopped into Rigattieri ceramics shop:
From there we made our way to Palazzo Grassi. I love going to this wonderful museum! Part of the Pinault collection, it is a classically beautiful Venetian palace, all shiny marble columns and gorgeous floors, housing contemporary works.
Here is how the entrance looks:
The show is called Chronorama–it is a decade by decade show, from 1910 to 1979, of photos from the Condé Nast collection–mostly Vogue, but also Vanity Fair and other magazines. Did you know that Condé Nast was actually a person?
Here are a bunch of snaps from our visit.
There were many photographers represented–lots of Edward Steichen, Irving Penn, Horst P Horst, Helmut Newton, Lee Miller and even Diane Arbus. Mostly I enjoyed seeing some of our heros looking so young!
Was she doing Pilates? See how she’s making the letters VOGUE with her body. Lisa Fonssagrives. 1940 by Horst P. Horst:
Last room of the show, the wall is covered with covers!
For me, this show was so engaging! I really love black and white photography and I really love fashion. I subscribe to the print edition of Vanity Fair.
We walked back home in record time because it really was raining by then–not too hard though. We made it home without getting soaked.
After a lunch of great stuff we had here from Elisa and Bisiol, we rested. We went out to the new wine store and got a bottle of red wine. It was super blustery, coming around the corner from Fondamente Nove towards the Campo Gesuiti–wow–the wind was really blowing!
We had an easy dinner at home–pasta with meatballs from Bisiol and the last of Elisa’s unbelievably delicious spinach.
Great day in spite of the weather!
