Rain again!
The mountains were shimmering in the morning light:
So, we got out the door at a reasonable hour and just around the corner it started to rain. We circled the block and came back to change to our rain jackets and struck out again. I really wanted to get a particular bread from Mauro bakery just over the Rialto bridge. No luck—they told me I would need to order it or come early on Saturday to get it. We got some other bread instead. Coffee at Caffè del Doge, just around the corner, hit the spot.
I passed this stylish woman with a rain hat meticulously fashioned from a plastic bag. I had to grab her photo from the back:
The Campo Santa Maria Mater Domini, in Santa Croce, was on the map for the walking group, Su e Zo. Thought we should go see it, so wandered in the rain a bit and found it. Apparently it has some great architecture and a beautiful pozzo/cistern. It was a lovely little gem to me, but the light in the rain made for poor photos:
There was a vintage clothing shop there so I had a look around. Heading back, being Monday, the Rialto Market was empty but the fishy smell lingers on. We stopped at Mascari for some dried porcini and a bottle of wine. Some Neopolitan dried pasta made its way into our bag, too. I like shopping there even though it is a touristy place. The same people have been there for generations and they have quality stuff.
We stopped in at our little local meat and cheese place and came home.
Our lunch was a table full of the fabulous Pugliese bread and focaccia from Mauro, prosciutto, cheese and cooked veggies from Elisa. A feast!
After our rest time we needed a few groceries and opted to walk to the Despar. It had finally stopped raining–yay! We walked home on a different street and I found this shrine which I have seen many times before, but someone has added a little framed icon on the bottom:
We also noticed this fish-eyed photo of the Doge’s Palace, afixed, sideways to a door around our corner:
For dinner we had the vegetable soup from Elisa and more bread.
Another fine day.
