Very Satisfying day
There is a cold spell here; it was below freezing in the morning, so we really took our time. Bundled up, we set out. First stop was coffee–not as good as Italy. Next stop was the “Tourist Information Center” which we always call the “I store.” We got a great paper map of Ljubljana.
From there we walked to the outdoor market. Flowers and fruits and veggies galore:
I got a whole bunch of different vegetables and some oranges. Then we walked through a covered market with meats, cheese, bread, dried beans and lots of walnuts. Tomorrow we will go on a food tour,so we’ll be well informed. I got a nice piece of goat cheese.
On the way home we got some tulips (10 stems for €5) and great bread from the bakery right near our place.
We came home and ate the bread and cheese and a nice little cucumber salad I made.
After rest time, we walked to the Museum of Contemporary Art. On the way I stopped to buy a wool hat–it’s really cold! And we went over a bridge–you can see the trees are starting to bloom here:
We are so spoiled by our Biennale experiences that we found it unimpressive. We did have a great conversation with one of the young people working there. She is from Kosovo and is studying here. We were reminded that this area used to be Yugoslavia and now it is 6 countries following years of political and social upheavals and war, which continues today in some areas. Slovenia gained its independence and sovereign nation status in 1991. My favorite thing in the museum was this series of curtains made from vegetable and fruit bags:
From there we went to see the Metelkova neighborhood with its outdoor art. Boys were playing basketball. Slovenia has a bunch of players in the NBA including the big star, Luka Dončic. Here’s a shot of part of the little neighborhood:
Coming home we crossed the Dragon Bridge. I tried to take some photos, but I was only happy with this one of a lamp post:
We stopped at the same wine shop and got a less expensive orange wine which wasn’t as good as the one yesterday. You get what you pay for?
I made us a vegetable and bean soup for dinner, and finished off the rest of the loaf of bread. Very satisfying, just like the day.
