Straw into Gold
May 1st is Labor Day in Italy and many other countries. It is a day to recognize, commemorate, and celebrate working people. Lots of shops were closed.
I felt like this was our last day here because the next day, Tuesday, is our real last full day, and it is supposed to rain all day. Perfect for packing.
We had no real plan and got a pretty late start but we headed out towards Misericordia. I really like how this shot came out—the flag out for the holiday:
We passed by this plaque, honoring the poet, Vianello, and his ode to wine:
On our walk, I saw a man using a Polaroid camera and began talking with him. He is part of a community of about 3,000 Italian users of Polaroid cameras, who all post on Instagram. He, Alan, walked us to where they had a little show. Most of the pieces, which consisted of four shots mounted on a black rectangle, had people in them; in fact a lot of beautiful naked women, but I liked these water shots the best:
I really wanted to stop for coffee at Torrefazione but the line was just too long so we kept walking. We got all the way to the end of the road and took in this view:
We headed back walking through the Ghetto, checked out some interesting mixed media works in a little art gallery and finally got some coffee at the Majer. As we walked back, we passed Vino Vero and there was an open table. We had a super cicchetti lunch there. From the top, going clockwise, they are: prosciutto with ricotta, seabass, bitter greens and creamy cheese, baccala mantecato, eggplant puree with a really great cow cheese and pistachios, and spicy salami with ricotta and a slice of pepper. They were all really delicious. We each had a glass of wine with them and Ken had a great time people watching.
We came home to rest. Went out again in the early evening to the bakery on Strada Nova for some cookies. I also got a piece of the crunchy hazelnut candy I love. Throwing caution to the wind now.
We had a bunch of leftovers including the radicchio lasagna from Bisiol–too creamy for Ken; I loved it.
And the rain bagan before we went to sleep.
So, with no plan, we still had a fabulous day!
Loved seeing the Vianello poem and your dedication… I tried to find a translation but none is available (at least not in English). Maybe he’s too contemporary???
Loved that shot at the end of the road…!
I have really enjoyed virtually traveling with you. Loved all the stories and photos! Enjoy your last day in Venezia and have a safe trip home!!
