Lots of Steps
Well, we really kept our feet in the street today! We walked over 20K steps.
Our morning took us to the Rialto market. I can tell the season easily looking at the produce. It’s fall!
We walked down the Ruga for a while and turned to come home. Near the top of the Rialto bridge we saw this photo session:
We came home and grabbed some lunch before heading out to Homo Faber–an extensive exhibition and a “celebration of contemporary craftsmanship.” It is on San Giorgio at the Cini Foundation so we had to get the boat at San Zaccaria to go across the canal. The ride was free with the ticket. We got a little lost on the way to the boat dock but we still got there early.
The show was phenomenal! All around the walls when you enter were many sewn panels, by people from all over the world, representing an Italian game, Gioca dell’oca/Game of the goose. The goose in the game is good luck. And according to the guide, it’s all a metaphor for the game of life. There were panels representing Venice maps and other symbols of the game but I liked the geese the best.
The next room we went into had this row of chairs:
We went on to the room full of porcelain, glass, paper and metal.
I really liked these little fish faces:
We took a break for a while to sit outside and talked to Josh who just happened to call while we were outside.
Back on the art trail I liked this high heel couch:
Ken was really taken with this porcelain vase meant to represent polar bears:
There was really an enormous amount of works to take in. We were running on fumes by the end and didn’t give the last rooms our fullest attention, but Stendahl Syndrome (google it) not withstanding, we made it back to the boat and were able to walk back home without a misstep.
We had a dinner date with an old Slow Travel friend and her husband and another couple. All’Amarone was the destination, so we went over the Rialto bridge again. Our reunion was wonderful. The Slow Travel Community is a real thing and we all still feel so close. It was great to get a real live hug from Colleen and to meet Jim. Our dinner was very good and we drank two different Amarone wines. But the visit was the best:
Walking home through Venice at night is such a pleasure, a dream and a privilege.
Of course, all night our phones were buzzing with messages about the hurricane. We will see what tomorrow brings.
Lovely post… love Venezia… spent a month there a few years ago…
We’re off to Spain now for a month… should be fun!
Tell me more about your Slow Travel group. That’s how we travel… would love to be involved…
Grazie!
I enjoyed your photos from the exhibition. Great fun meeting with your “sister” Colleen and meeting the fabulous and ever-so-talented Jim. You picked a wonderful place to eat. I dined there a few times last December with our dear friend Monica Cesarato. Keeping your feet in the street in Venice sounds like the perfect way to keep your mind off things at home. Hoping all is as safe as can be.
So magical and I’m so happy you met up with Colleen and Jim! What a full fun day!
Stendahl Syndrome – I experienced this at the Uffizi and it’s the reason I did not go in the Louvre when I was in Paris recently. Good to have a name for it. 🤪
Busy day! Really interesting art. I really had to take a closer look at that polar bear vase. You and Colleen!♥️♥️
