Food Tour
I had only budgeted for one serious food tour for this trip, so I chose “Taste of Prague”, a small local company with top notch reviews.
The tour didn’t start until noon, so we just lazed around all morning.
While waiting for the tour to start, I snapped this–to me they’re like the gondolas of Prague. You can rent one for a motor tour with a driver:
We met nine other Americans (I think we were the oldest) and our guide, Klara, near Lokal which was our first stop. Ken and I gave each other a look, but the food was much better than it had been the day before. I loved the slightly smokey Prague ham and tasted the dark beer. Klara emphasized how clean and organic all the food is, and gave us a good lesson about beer and the pub culture. She also gave us a lot of historical information and how it pertains to the cuisine.
From there we walked to a butcher shop, Naše Maso, with stand up places to eat and a wine shop with a few seats next door. Here’s the machine for cutting the ham:
We took seats at the wine bar and tasted a local, somewhat sweet, white, and a red with some small Italian sausages and an amazing meatloaf sandwich with pickles and mustard.
Then we rode the subway to Alma. I loved this beautiful, in an industrial way, place so much that I made a reservation for dinner in a couple of days. It is some kind of fusion of Nordic and Czech cuisine, with bright flavors and visually stunning plates:
We also tasted some far superior wine there. I am a sucker for an open kitchen:
After that we crossed the Legii bridge to the classic, French influenced, Cafe Savoy. The over-the-top desserts were served with individual pots of coffee and small elegant cups.
I considered it a very successful tour, although we didn’t really connect with any of the others in the group.
I like this building we passed on that side of the river. It was greener IRL, but there was barely any light:
We were pretty much disabled after all of that food, and stayed in for the rest of the evening. I could only drink water for dinner.
We watched a strange movie on max.com called Civil War—interesting post apocalyptic film set in the USA. It rang a little too true for us in the current state of the U.S.
I continue to be pleased with this town and our choice to come here.
