San Giorgio
San Giorgio island was our goal for the morning. Walking to San Zaccaria to catch the vap we saw this shop full of people learning mask making from the maestro:
On the way to San Giorgio, from the foggy 3 minute boat ride:
The show was by the Belgian artist Berlinde De Bruyckere. The scale of the pieces made it difficult to get a good photo; I did not get any worth posting. Her metal and epoxy pieces, focused on refugees, are huge and somewhat dismal.
Next stop: Le Stanze delle Fotografie—a large photography museum. The two shows were Helmut Newton, renowned, groundbreaking fashion photographer and Julian Lennon, son of…
The Newton works were classics. See how he tells a story while still really showing off the clothes:
I was annoyed that there was no mention of the names of the gorgeous models, but that’s fashion.
Upstairs the Julian Lennon show was gorgeous and enjoyable. In 2007, Lennon founded The White Feather Foundation, a charitable organization for the purpose of “preserving life” around the world. Here’s the white feather:
The photos were mostly big black and whites. This one, called “Pure”taken in Kenya, was my favorite but it was hard to choose:
There were also some lovely, color cloud shots and portraits of famous people.
I also managed the quickest visit ever to the Stanze del Vetro. Entering you walk down a hall with old videos of Venice on the side walls. This is actually a flat wall at the end of that hall, which creates the illusion of rooms beyond. I just about walked into it.
Glassworks send me, and I could have lingered so much longer. I love the House of Venini:
And this unique piece from the Brothers Barovie:
Back to San Zaccaria and a stroll through Piazza San Marco—so so crowded!
This was the saddest shot I got all day:
And we stopped for a delicious “working man’s lunch” at bar Tiziano. What a find! We had pumpkin risotto, roast pork stuffed with spinach and speck and sautéed vegetables—plus a spritz, a glass of wine and a coffee all for under €30. Their Spritzes are consistently the best, hands down.
Came home for a rest.
In the late afternoon we visited a bakery for fresh bread for our salad dinner. And we did a little gift shopping.
We’ve started watching the Apple+ show, Disclaimer, with Cate Blanchett. The second episode kind of cleared up the confusion of the first. So far we like it a lot.
We are both feeling a bit of upset about leaving, but we have 2 more weeks of travel adventures ahead.
Julian Lennon-yes. Starbucks-no. Ugh.
